I come from a land down under…

The first fleet arrived in Sydney, Australia in 1788, since then we have had a fascination with ‘The land down under’. How can you trace your ancestors that travelled to this incredible County? Many of us can claim ancestors from Australia, or find ancestors that travelled there.

My July 2015 Blog described the journey I had taken ‘down under´ to discover William’s story:

William travelled to the Gold Coast, immigrating to Perth, Australia in 1925. He married a school teacher.
William left his family when his son was 5 years old.
During World War Two William’s wife sent food parcels to William’s family in London. After the war the families lost touch.

Over 1.5 million poms’ travelled to Australia before 1900, and many hundreds of thousands more followed in the 20th Century as ´£10 poms’.

How do you go about tracking your ancestors?

A good starting point is to read my July 2015 blog [link above], then remember that the Commonwealth of Australia is administered by 6 states and 2 territories which make things a little more complex than the UK. Ideally you should have a sense of where in Australia your ancestors originated or where they emigrated to.
